Forge Developer Tools Hub
A hub concept for browser-local utilities—formatters, encoders, and inspectors—with a consistent SmokyCoders terminal aesthetic.
- Next.js
- Web Crypto
- CSS Modules
- Client-side processing
Overview
Forge Tools outlines a maintainable hub for everyday developer utilities that prefer local processing over unnecessary uploads.
Problem / Design Challenge
Utility sites often feel disposable. The challenge was to design a cohesive tools shell that still ships practical functions.
Proposed Solution & Architecture
Proposed architecture uses a shared tool layout, validated inputs, copy/reset actions, and clear limitation notes—especially for hashing and encoding demos.
Key Features
- Tool switcher with keyboard-friendly tabs
- Input validation and readable error states
- Copy output and reset controls
- Local-first processing guidance
Engineering Decisions & Trade-offs
- Avoided server execution of arbitrary user code
- Documented hashing limitations for non-password-storage contexts
- Kept dependency surface minimal
Testing & Verification Notes
Portfolio case study documents the intended tool UX. Individual utility implementations ship under /tools as they are completed and verified.
Lessons Learned
- Trust grows when tools explain what they do not do
- Consistent chrome makes many small tools feel like one product
Next Steps
- Expand verified utilities in the live tools hub
- Add unit tests for encoding edge cases
